This roundtable celebrates the second edition of Suzanne Jill Levine’s landmark text on translation, The Subversive Scribe: Translating Latin American Fiction. Originally published by Graywolf Press in 1991, The Subversive Scribe is slated to be republished by Dalkey Archive Press (University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign) in October 2009 with a newly revised and extended introduction. Dalkey Press prides itself on being “subversive” by selecting texts that in some way challenge preconceived notions just as Jill Levine has consistently challenged our preconceived notions about literary translation.
